Type RIR spiral wound gaskets supplied by AMG Sealing are specialised, heavy-duty semi-metallic sealing solutions engineered for recessed and confined flange geometries. Featuring a V-shaped metallic winding strip interleaved with soft filler material, Type RIR gaskets incorporate a solid metal
inner retaining ring
and
no outer guide ring. The inner ring is necessary as a compression stop. RIR gaskets provide high mechanical stability, limit process turbulence, and protect against winding collapse in aggressive environments.
By combining different winding materials and metals, these spiral wound gaskets can be custom-tailored to suit a wide variety of process conditions, capable of sealing fluid pressures
up to 400 bar
and operating across temperatures from
cryogenic levels up to 1000°C.
Applications
Type RIR gaskets are designed for confined flange joints where the recess provides inherent centring. They are the primary choice for
Male-and-Female (M&F)
and
Tongue-and-Groove (T&G)
flange configurations, as well as high-pressure valve bonnets and vessel handholes. They are heavily utilised across high-velocity process lines, chemical reactors, and oil refinery catalytic units where fluid erosion and turbulent media must be tightly controlled.
Gasket Construction & Component Functions
-
Inner Retaining Ring:
Prevents inward buckling of the sealing elements under extreme bolt loads, shields the winding layers from high-temperature process media, reduces internal turbulence, and acts as a heat sink to minimise flange face erosion.
-
V-Shaped Sealing Element:
Engineered from alternating layers of preformed metallic ribbon and soft filler material (such as flexible graphite, PTFE, or mica), offering dynamic, spring-like recovery to maintain structural integrity under severe thermal cycling and pressure spikes.
-
Recessed Alignment Design:
Intentionally omits the outer ring to fit seamlessly inside deep flange pockets or grooves, ensuring the high-density winding makes direct, complete contact with the targeted sealing faces.
Availability and Options
AMG Sealing stocks and supplies RIR spiral wound gaskets across an extensive range of nominal sizes and pressure ratings conforming strictly to
ASME B16.20,
EN 1514-2, and
EN 12560-2
dimensions. Standard high-performance material configurations feature a 316L stainless-steel inner ring, 316L stainless-steel windings, and a flexible graphite filler. Specialised configurations incorporating Inconel, Monel, Duplex, and PTFE are readily available upon request.
Note: For standard flat-face or raised-face flanges that require external centring via the bolt circle, please refer to our
