Type R spiral wound gaskets
supplied by AMG Sealing are basic, high-integrity semi-metallic sealing components consisting entirely of the sealing element only, with no inner or outer rings. Featuring a V-shaped metallic winding strip precisely interleaved with high-performance soft filler material, Type R gaskets are specifically designed for applications where the flange configuration provides full mechanical confinement and compression limitation.
By combining different winding materials and metals, these raw spiral wound elements can be custom-tailored to suit a wide variety of process conditions, capable of sealing fluid pressures
up to 400 bar
and operating across temperatures from
cryogenic levels up to 1000°C.
Applications
Type R gaskets are exclusively designed for fully enclosed or recessed joints where the groove depth and width match the gasket geometry. They are the primary choice for
Tongue-and-Groove (T&G)
and specific
Male-and-Female (M&F)
flange configurations. Type R elements are widely utilised across industrial pumps, high-pressure valve bonnets, pressure vessel handholes, and thermal exchanger joints where a compact, recessed footprint is required.
Gasket Construction & Component Functions

V-Shaped Sealing Element:
Engineered from alternating layers of preformed metallic ribbon and soft filler material (such as flexible graphite, PTFE, or mica). The profile acts as a dynamic spring, expanding and contracting to maintain a tight seal under thermal cycling and heavy vibration.

Preformed Plies:
Built with multiple plies of raw metal winding at the inner and outer diameters to provide enhanced structural stability and compressibility during initial bolt torque.

Fully Confined Design:
Intentionally omits both guide and retaining rings, relying on the solid walls of the flange recess to prevent radial flow, outward blowout, or inward buckling of the sealing elements.
Availability and Options
AMG Sealing stocks and supplies Type R spiral wound gaskets across an extensive range of nominal sizes and pressure ratings conforming strictly to
ASME B16.20,
EN 1514-2, and
EN 12560-2
dimensions. Standard material configurations feature 316L stainless-steel metallic windings with flexible graphite filler. Specialised alloy configurations (such as Inconel, Monel, Duplex, and Hastelloy) and alternative fillers like PTFE or high-temperature mica are available upon request.
